Uitwisseling Troyes – november 2015

Vrijdag 13 april waren we weer thuis.

Exchange Troyes – november 2015

When Paris was just Paris

On Sunday, November 8, 12 enthousiastic students accompanied by their teachers Wouter van der Helm en Wanda Hoogenhout left for Troyes, France. Students in the 4th year at PCC Het Lyceum were given a chance to join an international exchange program by writing a letter explaining their motivation. The cities of Alkmaar in The Netherlands, Darmstadt in Germany and Troyes in France are twin towns. Schools in these cities, PCC Het Lyceum, Lycée des Lombards, and the Georg Büchner Schule, are joined in a partnership that promotes the contact between European students in an exchange program.

The Thalys took the Dutch students to Paris where they met with twelve exchange students from Germany. Together they continued their trip by train to Troyes.

Upon their arrival in Troyes the students were welcomed by their French hosts. They would spend the first day with their French co-students and their families. For some students that meant a two hour trip by car.

Lycée des Lombards in Troyes is a boarding school, accommodating many students who live further away from Troyes. Claire, Danielle, Rutger and Sven stayed at the boarding school as of Monday. Their French partners stay on the school campus during the week, which gave these four Dutch students a chance to experience the strict regime of the boarding school.

This  year’s theme of the internationalisation program is ‘Health’. On Monday, when the students met in school, they were all given a white lab coat. This marked the opening of the International Conference on Health and Wellbeing.

Students from different countries worked together on assignments about actual health issues as if they were real journalists. It took a little effort to get used to using the English language, but they managed and their efforts resulted in news items. After presenting their news items to the group they all enjoyed a warm three-course lunch in the school’s restaurant.

In the afternoon all students visited the old city center and city hall, where they met with Mrs. Bazin-Malgras, member of  city council. Journalists from local news services were also present and the students were a little nervous, since they were going to speech in English on the importance of internationalisation and exchange projects for students for a shared awareness in Europe.

Tuesday came and all students were getting used to speaking English. Now and then the Dutch students even communicated in English amongst themselves. In the morning students visited a regular class in Lycée des Lombards. The difference with classes back in the Netherlands was striking. Here in France everybody paid attention and was focused on the lessons and a regular schoolday takes from 8 am till 6 pm. In the afternoon the students paid a visit to the village of Essoyes where the famous artist Renoir once lived and was buried.

That evening the students spent time together at the bowling alley, which marked the end of the exchange program for that week. November 11, Remembrance Day, is not a school day in France. The students spent the day with their French hosts.

After one more night in the homes of the hosting families or for some on campus, it was time for the students to say goodbye to each other on Troyes’ train station. A few hours in Paris gave them the opportunity to do some sight-seeing: Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Sacré Coeur and Montmartre were checked out in a rush. They arrived at the Gard du Nord just in time for the Thalys that took them back to Alkmaar where they arrived full of new experiences and were welcomed back by their families.

On Friday April 13 we were home safe, but the attacks in Paris felt really close, thinking of these five days in France, the warm welcome by the French families and our visit to the French capital.
