Breakfast without a plate

Sunday, February 5. A group of 24 4-HAVO (=year 10) students takes the train. Destination: the international exchange adventure in Troyes, France.

Like every school year the students in this year group have been given the chance to sign up for the internationalisation program. In this program every participating student takes part in an international exchange is linked to a student from one of the sister schools in either Darmstadt or Troyes. Unfortunately, the Georg-Büchner Schule in Darmstadt couldn’t join the program this year. Nevertheless, the program proceeded and all our Dutch students were teamed with a French student.

The subject of the program is Health, both physical and mental. It is an important item on the agenda of the European Community and it is a topic of concern in education. PCC Het Lyceum is a tobacco and alcohol-free school and the well-being of teachers and students has had our attention for a while now. Since Health also forms part of the curriculum at the participating schools in Germany and France, the exchange program offers excellent opportunities of sharing experiences and ideas.

After a pleasant journey by Thalys and SNCF the students were picked up at the train station in Troyes by their French partners. A thrilling moment, since it was the first time the Dutch students met with the French students in real life after nothing but contact on social media and by phone. The Dutch students left the station with the French host families to their homes. We didn’t see them again until the next day at the school: Lycée Lombards. From our students’ stories we then learned that eating habits in France are different from those in The Netherlands. In particular the late hour for dinner and having breakfast without a plate was striking. The food itself was also something to get used to: Erik even ate andouillette, which looks like sausage, but is made of intestines and organ meat …

The following days our focus was on Health, in various activities and assignments. Tristan, being a soccer player, did not really enjoy the Pilates workshop. Senna, Babs and Derk and their French partners made us carry out some heavy exercises during an intensive cross fit training. Xena made me some anti-ageing serum (even though I don’t need any …). Isa Visser, Delphi and Sam tested their sense organs and Hilde achieved a state of zen in the meditation class. Jurgen and Wouter stretched their vocal chords while doing karaoke and Lars felt queasy by the smell of the Chaource cheese on the cheese farm. Bente, Anna and Alannah designed a beautiful logo in stained glass for the internationalisation programme. Fleur and Marit spoke to the councillor in the town hall of Troyes and explained to her why we think it is important to focus and work together on health issues with other countries in Europe.

The most valuable outcome of any international student exchange program will always be the raised awareness and personal growth of the students. On our train journey back to Holland and during the stop-over in Paris, Carlijn and Sophie told me what this trip meant to them. They realised they had managed to cope with situations they had never met with before, in a foreign country, in a family they didn’t know, while expressing  themselves in English or French, languages that are not their mother tongue, sometimes even turning to sign language. Our students now know they can handle it. Some of our students, such as Alex, Max and Sem, had already considered studying or working abroad before going on the trip to Troyes. The exchange has only increased their enthusiasm to do so. They have learned that eating food you don’t know, using a language foreign to you, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed or staying on campus like Jamie and Isa, eating breakfast without a plate: you can handle these situations and you can even learn from them!

Ontbijten zonder bord

Erik at zelfs andouillette.
